Water Wheels

Water Wheels are Power icon.png power Buildings icon.png Buildings that generate Power from flowing Fluids icon.png Fluids , such as Water and Badwater.

Construction

Place Water Wheels in flowing Fluids, aligned with the flow. They generate Power when fluid flows parallel to the wheel under the axle. Water Wheels are undershot only, which means they react only to fluid flowing horizontally, not vertically.

Water Wheels can be placed adjacent to each other to use all the current in a wide flow. The axles transmit power between the Water Wheels.

Usage

The channel depth makes no difference. The power generated is proportional to the flow in the lowest block of Water Wheels. If the fluid height reaches the axles, Water Wheels become Flooded Building icon.png Flooded and stop working.

Connect appropriate buildings and structures to the axles.

Strategies

  • Although Power Wheels are also available for new colonies, they require workers to generate Power. Unless flowing fluids are unreachable, Water Wheels are the better generators. However, Water Wheels do not generate during Drought icon.png Droughts.
  • Funnel the fluid flow as narrowly as possible without flooding to maximise flow and thus power output.
  • Once options like Explosive icon.png Explosives and Levee icon.png Levees are available, make long straight runs of flowing fluids to fill with a chain of Water Wheels for large amounts of power when there is no Drought icon.png Drought.
