In reality, numerous experimental programs are developing algae as a food source. You've probably eaten seaweed before. Did you enjoy that sushi roll? Algae can produce 4-15 tonnes of protein a hectare each year, compared to only 0.6-1.2 for soybeans. Additionally algae can provide vitamin B12, which is often missing from plant-based diets. Algae is also a good source of amino acids, fatty acids, and other vitamins too.
