Although they can be eaten raw, they are not an early-game food as they need to be protected against badtides. The main issue is not so much the death of the trees and the subsequent delay for replanting and maturation, but rather the contamination of the gatherers working with them.
Trivia
Mangrove fruits are a popular food in the Maldives. They play a key role in a Maldivan legend about a girl who grows up in a mangrove forest. She later marries into the royal family. A few years after, her relatives brought her some mangrove fruits. To their surprise, she didn't recognize the fruit and asked whether they were toys. The moral of the story is: don't forget where you came from.
